A new Gallup poll released today finds most Americans, by nearly a 2-1 margin, saying the government is doing too little to protect the environment. “A majority also says that President George W. Bush is doing a poor rather than a good job protecting the environment, with a substantial minority accusing the Bush administration of weakening the country’s environmental policies,” Gallup reports.

According to the annual poll on this subject, conducted March 13-16, 2006, 62% of Americans say the government is doing too little to protect the environment, while 33% say it’s doing about the right amount, and just 4% say the government is doing too much. This year’s reading continues a negative trend since the 2003 poll.

Similarly, 55% of Americans say Bush personally is doing a poor job of protecting the environment and 33% say a good job.

Democrats, as would be expected, are much more critical than Republicans but the key here is that Independents largely agree with the Democrats. Only 33% of Republicans believe the government is doing too little to protect the environment, but 67% of independents and 78% of Democrats feel that way.
