A new Gallup poll released today, as America enters its feverish holiday/awards movie season, finds Tom Hanks still riding high as public favorite — and with Mel Gibson getting a mixed reception after his recent arrest and anti-Semitic outburst.
Hanks was picked as the favored actor among the 13 tested, with more than 4 in 10 Americans saying they make a special effort to see his movies. Gibson ranks sixth, following Robert DeNiro, Julia Roberts, Will Smith and Sandra Bullock behind Hanks, with 26% saying they would still “make a special effort” to see any movie he appears in (his directorial effort “Apocalypto” opens tomorrow).
Reese Witherspoon, sometimes known as “America’s Favorite,” actually comes in just behind Mel.
However, the 15% who say they would “avoid” seeing anything with Gibson easily tops the other stars listed above, in negativity. In fact, only two stars on the entire list score higher in that measure — Tom Cruise, with 34% voting thumb’s down, and Angelina Jolie, with 18%. Only 12% say they would make a big effort to see a Cruise flick.
The survey reached 1,003 adults from Nov. 27 to Nov. 29.
