Gannett has added another university paper to its stable.
The company’s Florida Today in Melbourne purchased The Central Florida Future and the Seminole Chronicle from Knight Publishing.
Terms of the deal, brokered by W.B. Grimes & Co., were not disclosed.
The Central Florida Future is the newspaper of the University of Central Florida and the Seminole Chronicle is a weekly paper. Both are based in Orlando.
Mark Mikolajczyk, president and publisher of Florida Today, said in a statement the Central Florida Future will continue to be run by students.
“We [acquired] the Central Florida Future because it is a student newspaper with an excellent business model,” he said. “The staff of Florida Today is eager to provide the resources and support to teach all levels, from reporting to advertising. We also look forward to providing expanded career development opportunities with both Florida Today and Gannett.”
Heissam Jebailey, owner and university relations director of the Central Florida Future will continue to work with the paper. He told his paper about the sale: “I’m at a point in my life where the timing is right to bring on a corporation that can improve the newspaper even more.”
Last year, Gannett purchased FSView and Florida Flambeau the campus newspapers of Florida State University.
