Gannett Co. has bought the News-Record & Sentinel, a Marshall, N.C.-based weekly paper that covers Madison County. The purchase was announced Thursday in an article by Dale Neal in The Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times, which is also owned by Gannett.
The article said the weekly was sold by Fred Hughes, who launched the Sentinel in 2000 and later bought the competing News-Record, founded in 1901.
Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
The News-Record & Sentinel has a paid circulation of 6,250, according to the Editor & Publisher International Year Book.
Citizen-Times President and Publisher Virgil L. Smith named Jason Propst, who had been a retail sales manager for the daily, as the weekly’s general manager. Paul Clark, a longtime feature writer for the daily, was named editor.
