Don Kay, Brad Moseley Inc. press operations director and retired operations vice president at the Los Angeles Newspaper Group and The Sun, San Bernardino, Calif., died last Thursday morning. He was 62.
Sun Publisher Fred Hamilton told his paper that day, “It was really tough giving everyone the news this morning. He was really, really well liked.” At the Sun, Kay was warmly remembered, from the business offices to the newsroom.
Kay was a longtime Gannett Co. employee and go-to guy for pressroom and production issues throughout the newspaper group. In an interview with E&P last year, Gannett U.S. Community Publishing Production Vice President J. Austin Ryan referred to Kay as “an artisan in the pressroom.”
Nancy Kay, Hamilton’s assistant, told the publisher her husband probably had suffered a massive heart attack following a week of flu-like symptoms and difficulty breathing Wednesday night.
“He started as a paperboy and never left” the newspaper business, she told the Sun.
