I retired after almost 50 years as editor, and publisher of daily newspapers. It saddens me to see what’s happening today. Newspapers have forgotten their mission is LOCAL news. That leads to circulation, and circulation leads to what may be charged for advertising. Without local news, it means subscribers are reading day-old, or older, news already covered on television. Seems editors are forgetting that every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle and relative want to read about what’s happening in their local community. And, schools and local government are great sources for this news. It doesn’t help that so many newspapers are owned by corporations with no experience in the industry. It saddens me because this country today needs newspapers more than ever. That can’t happen when staffs and pages continue to be slashed. Further, opinions need to remain on opinion pages, not throughout the newspaper.
