The Gannett Co. announced today that operating revenue for January increased 2.9% when compared to the same period last year.
Newspaper advertising revenue for the month grew 4.7%. Classified revenue rose 4.1% on a small decrease of 0.2% in ROP ad volume. Employment was up 9.8%, real estate was flat, and automotive declined 3.1%.
Local advertising revenues rose 4.6% on a slight drop of 0.8% in ROP ad volume. Larger advertisers outpaced small and medium-sized advertisers for the month, the company reported. Gains were achieved in the department store, consumer electronics, health, telecommunications, and home improvement categories. Furniture, entertainment, grocery, and restaurant categories declined.
National advertising grew 6.6% on an 8% decrease in ad volume. While USA Weekend experienced higher national revenue in January, advertising revenue at USA Today decreased 1.2% on a 1.9% decline in paid ad pages, to 366 from 373.
Daily net paid circulation for Gannett dropped 2.6%, and Sunday decreased 3.3%.
