Advertising revenue at Gannett slipped 6% to $360 million in August compared to the same period a year ago.
Local advertising revenue fell 4.6% to $155 million on declines in all categories except home improvement.
Classified revenue dropped 9.5% to $153 million dragged down by the company’s U.S. properties. Real estate was down 15.5%, employment declined 11.9%, and auto decreased 10.5%. For Gannett’s U.S. newspapers only, classified fell 15.2% on declines in real estate, down 25.8%; employment, down 17.8%; and auto, down 10.5%.
National advertising grew 1.3% to $51.8 million.
At USA Today, advertising revenue was up 6.9% on paid ad pages of 236, flat from last year. The national newspaper reported strong gains in the automotive, telecommunications, advocacy, pharmaceutical, and home and building categories.
Online revenue at the company increased 9.2%.
