Gannett reported today that total revenue fell 4.5% in February. Newspaper ad revenue dropped 3.8% due in part to severe winter weather in the Midwest and Northeast.
Local advertising revenue was down 0.5%. All major categories within local were soft.
Classified revenue declined 6.3%. Within the category, real estate decreased 7.2% and employment dropped 7.5%. Automotive was down 12.1%.
At the company?s U.S. community newspapers, classified advertising revenue plunged 10.6%. Real estate dropped 15.5%, employment fell 11.3%, and auto declined 13.1%.
National advertising was down 5.7%. At the company?s domestic newspapers the category fell 13.8%.
At USA Today, advertising revenue dropped 13.9% on a decline in ad pages to 291 from 344. The entertainment, automotive, and technology were weak.
Broadcast revenue fell 20.1% on tough comparisons since the Olympics were held in February last year.
