Gannett Co. Inc. said yesterday it plans to build a $48 million production plant in Johnson City, three miles west of Binghamton, N.Y.

The company expects its 96,000 square-foot facility to employ approximately 115 people and house printing, distribution and storage facilities for the Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton, the Elmira Star-Gazette and The Ithaca Journal. Excavation begins later this year and the plant is slated to be operating by late 2006.

The centerpiece of the new plant will be a 75,000-copy-per-hour Colora press that the Press & Sun Bulletin is buying from KBA (E&P, Oct. 20, 2003).
