“Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau has designed a sticker featuring his Mr. Butts character for the city of Santa Monica, Calif.

According to Universal Press Syndicate, the sticker is the centerpiece of a public-awareness campaign to make people know smoking is not allowed on Santa Monica beaches.

“Mr. Butts is such an irrepressibly upbeat advocate of bad choices that it’s good to see his stunned visage evoked for a worthy cause,” said Trudeau, who spent summers in southern California during the early days of the 1970-launched “Doonesbury.”

Because they are slow to degrade, cigarette butts mar the environment for years. And being subjected to second-hand smoke doesn’t make for an enjoyable beach experience.
