Detroit News columnist Neal Rubin takes over as writer of the “Gil Thorp” comic starting March 29.

Frank McLaughlin will continue to illustrate the Tribune Media Services strip, which was previously written by Jerry Jenkins. “Gil Thorp” was created by Jack Berrill in 1958, and now runs in 60-plus papers.

The comic stars a high school coach/athletic director. Rubin is a former sports and feature writer who plans to address topics such as overzealous youth coaches, Internet gambling, and tabloid TV in “Gil Thorp.”
