The California Community News (CCN) unit of Tribune Co.’s Los Angeles Times has signed an agreement to purchase for its Irwindale facility additional post-press equipment from GMA, Allentown, Pa.

The order includes two 16:2 SLS3000 inserters, four CombiStack bundle-building machines, and 10 AF300 automatic hopper loaders. In addition, GMA will expand four of CCN’s existing SLS2000 inserters with additional insert positions.

Creating more than seven million inserted packages weekly for the Times, CCN already uses an A68 press from GMA’s Swiss parent company, Muller Martini, to print 3.5 million TMC pieces weekly, three SLS3000 inserters, seven SLS2000 inserters, and 20 CombiStacks. This latest order brings the number of GMA inserters to 12 and the CombiStack total to 24. CCN also utilizes GMA’s SAM Plans production planning and control system software to organize, manage, and report on the three billion inserts it processes yearly.

In a statement announcing the order, CCN Operations Director Russ Newton called GMA “the logical choice when it came to expanding our operation based on the success we have had with all of the products GMA offers.”
