Columbian Journalist Escaped Death Threats
Ignacio Gomez, a Colombian journalist who sought refuge in the U.S.
from death threats at home, has joined this year’s class of Nieman
Fellows at Harvard University.
Gomez, an investigative reporter for the newspaper El Espectador
in Bogota, was admitted to the program for the 2000-2001 academic year
even though the 24 attending journalists were named earlier this year.
Nieman Curator Bob Giles explained in his announcement that the Nieman
Foundation sometimes allows a journalist who has encountered a dangerous
or career-threatening situation to join the class at a later date. Gomez
has been admitted with funding from The Freedom Forum.
Gomez, 38, has worked as a journalist covering the Colombian government
and the growing role of the United States military in the Colombian
