Syracuse University Library’s Special Collections Research Center has been awarded a grant of $79,440 to support its collection of original cartoon art, reported Mike Rhode today in his ComicsDC blog.

The grant — which will help fund a full-time archivist for two years — is from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

Syracuse’s collection includes more than 20,000 original items by about 170 artists. Included are comics by Bud Fisher (“Mutt & Jeff”), Hal Foster (“Prince Valiant”), Mort Walker (“Beetle Bailey”), and Morrie Turner (“Wee Pals”); as well as editorial cartoons by F.O. Alexander (Philadelphia Bulletin), Carey Orr (Chicago Tribune), and William Gropper (The Daily Worker).
