Harland Simon, Oak Brook, Ill., and Milton Keynes, England, has been contracted by The Gleaner Co. Ltd., in Jamaica, to replace the drives on a Goss Urbanite press.
The contract calls for replacing Fincor drives and the old PLC system; replacing all proprietary communications with an Ethernet/IP network connecting four Allen Bradley PowerFlex DC drives with an Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLC, with built-in RSLogix diagnostic software, and installing a touchscreen interface and central maintenance PC to streamline fault-finding procedures and allow for remote diagnostic support using a virtual private network line.
The existing system will remain in production throughout the project until the new system is fully tested and commissioned, keeping costs down while replacing all vulnerable system parts.
It is Harland Simon’s second project for Gleaner, where in the 1990s the it replaced the drive for a Crabtree Viscount letterpress, according to Gleaner Special Projects Manager Ian Roxburgh.
