Harland Simon, Milton Keynes, England, and Oak Brook, Ill., has secured its second inserter upgrade order.
A contract was signed to upgrade the Ventura County (Calif.) Star’s ICON inserter controls on its two NP 630 inserters over the winter, with both to be in full production by early 2009 and without disrupting the paper’s production schedule.
The principle upgrade involves replacing ICON with Harland Simon’s InsertNet controls. In addition, the inserters’ PLC and remote I/O will be replaced. Both jobs are based on industry-standard PC and PLC hardware. Harland Simon also will install its mailroom upper-level management information system, PRIMA Mailroom Manager, to oversee insert job orders, monitor hopper cycles for maintenance, and schedule production by microzone, truck routes and postal walks across both inserters.
To further integrate third-party systems, interfaces to Ventura’s in-line inkjet printer and PBS circulation systems are included, with Mailroom Manager processing and storing all route information.
The existing system will remain operational until the new system is tested and commissioned, holding down costs while replacing all vulnerable parts. Harland Simon says the solution is based on techniques used with its PressNet press controls over the past 10 years.
This order coincides with completion an upgrade at The Register Guard, Eugene, Ore., which has three inserters (one double out), PRIMA Mailroom Manager and a Gripper Stacker Node replacement (E&P Online, Feb 26).
