Gannett, Liberty File Motion in Star-Bulletin Closure Battle

The owners of Honolulu’s two daily newspapers have asked a court to dismiss a state
antitrust lawsuit that’s blocking them from closing the afternoon Honolulu
Star-Bulletin .

In the anticipated motion filed March 2, Gannett Co. Inc. and Liberty Newspapers argue
that the state’s suit is moot because their agreement to close the afternoon paper
expired in December, Gannett’s Honolulu Advertiser reported. A trial in the state’s
case is set to begin Sept. 19.

The owners also said in the motion they will seek another way to shut down the afternoon
paper because it will continue to shrink in the face of economic forces.
