The second volume of a six-book series reprinting the entire 1934-1946 run of Milton Caniff’s classic “Terry and the Pirates” comic has just been released by IDW Publishing.
It covers the years 1937 and 1938.
The large-format, 352-page hardcover book includes black-and-white daily strips as well as Sunday pages reproduced in their original color. It also features an introduction by author Pete Hamill, who has been a newspaper columnist and editor.
Dean Mullaney is the editor and designer of the series.
“Terry and the Pirates” was a groundbreaking adventure strip set in China. Characters included young Terry Lee, his adult pal Pat Ryan, their guide Connie, the Dragon Lady, and many others.
Caniff (1907-1988) — who also created the “Steve Canyon” strip that ran from 1947 to 1988 — was the subject of a comprehensive R.C. Harvey-authored biography published last year by Fantagraphics Books.
