The Herald Journal has been sold to Community Media Group of West Frankfort, Ill., expanding the publishing company’s operations in northwest Indiana.
The newspaper had been owned by Columbus, Ind.-based Home News Enterprises since 1984.
The Herald Journal will be operated by Community Media subsidiary Kankakee Valley Publishing Co., which has 10 weeklies and two other daily newspapers. The dailies are in nearby Rensselaer, Ind., and Watseka, Ill.
Don L. Hurd, president of Kankakee Valley Publishing, will serve as publisher of the Herald Journal and continue in that role at other Kankakee newspapers. He said the Herald Journal is “a great match” for the group.
The sale was effective Saturday.
Home News Enterprises sold the Herald Journal so it could focus on developing its cluster of newspapers in the Indianapolis area and southern Indiana and commit capital to other ventures, said Jeff Brown, president.
He said Herald Journal readers and advertisers would be better served by the sale because Kankakee owns several community newspapers in adjoining areas of Indiana and Illinois.
Community Media also owns and operates newspapers in Iowa, Michigan and Pennsylvania. In Indiana, it also owns daily newspapers in Winchester and Hartford City.
