The Illinois Press Association has appointed Josh Sharp its director of government relations. He succeeds Beth Bennett, who is now executive director of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.
Sharp has served as the IPA’s assistant director of government relations for six years, during which his primary duties included lobbying and member services. Since May he has served as the interim director of government relations.
Sharp “is well-versed in the issues facing the newspaper industry in Illinois, is committed to our industry and our members, and has proven skills within the state legislative arena,” Dennis DeRossett, the IPA’s executive director, said in a statement.
Among the issues Sharp will continue to monitor are transparency in government with open records and open meetings, the Freedom of Information Act and the preservation of public notices. He will serve as the IPA’s point person for member inquiries on all legislative and lobbying issues.
With more than 500 daily and weekly newspaper members, the Illinois Press Association is the largest state newspaper association in the U.S.
