In Earnest: The Backstory

White House senior aides made two Air Force One manifests for President Barack Obama’s trip to Europe next week — one with outgoing press secretary Jay Carney on it and one with the principal deputy press secretary, Josh Earnest.  

The move confused aides planning the trip, but also helped prevent the shakeup from leaking until Obama — who wanted to make the public announcement himself — surprised reporters in the briefing room to let them know Earnest would be replacing Carney at the podium.
