Gannett has appointed Michael Kane president of its Interstate Group and president and publisher of The Indianapolis Star. He succeeds Barbara Henry in Indianapolis, who announced her retirement on Aug. 1.
Kane most recently served as Gannett’s East Publishing Group vice president and president and as publisher of the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle.
“Michael is an excellent leader with broad experience in running complex operations,” Bob Dickey, president of Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing, said in a statement. “He is attuned to people’s needs as well as the business of journalism, which makes him an excellent person to run the Interstate Group.”
Kane joined Gannett in 1992 as manager of marketing services at The News Journal in Wilmington, Del., holding various management positions in Poughkeepsie and Westchester County, N.Y. He served as president and publisher of the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal and regional vice president for Gannett’s Midwest Newspaper Group.
Earlier in his career, Kane served as the assistant executive director of the International Newsmedia Marketing Association (INMA).
