Brian Priester was named president and publisher of the Statesman-Journal in Salem, Ore., by Gannett Co. Wednesday.

Priester previously was vice president of market development and strategic planning at The Indianapolis Star.

Priester joined Gannett in 1994 as marketing director at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was named vice president of market development for the Star in 2001, and two years later became vice president of circulation.

Priester has won seven Gannett President’s Rings for outstanding performance and was the chain’s Marketing Executive of the Year in 1999.

“His background in research, marketing, circulation and overall community newspaper management provides an excellent foundation for his new assignment,” said Robert J. Dickey, senior group president of the Pacific Newspaper Group, which includes the Salem newspapers.

Priester is a native of St. Louis, and received an undergraduate degree in political science and a master’s degree in communication from Central Missouri State University.
