The Rockford (Ill.) Register Star apologized to readers Aug. 2 for late delivery of the previous morning’s Sunday edition, citing mechanical problems with one of its inserters.

The down inserter “delayed the end of the press run by several hours,” the notice explained, adding that carriers, who ordinarily begin their routes at about 3 AM, were unable to begin deliveries until 7 AM.

“We handled nearly 10 times the normal Sunday customer service calls,” with some customers on hold for long periods, the paper reported, referring subscribers experiencing similar delays to the paper’s round-the-clock online customer service.
