Michael Ramirez, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist let go by the Los Angeles Times effective Dec. 31, has joined Investor’s Business Daily as a senior editor/editorial cartoonist.
IBD created the staff cartoonist position for Ramirez, who received his Pulitzer while with The Commercial Appeal of Memphis in 1994. He’s syndicated to more than 400 newspapers by Copley News Service.
“For the last five years we’ve expanded the depth and content of our editorial page, and Michael is a part of that ongoing effort,” said IBD Founder/Chairman William J. O’Neil in a statement.
Ramirez could not be immediately reached for comment by E&P. But he said in the same IBD statement: “The trend is cost-cutting efficiencies in the news world, and in some instances, media run the risk of weakening the quality of journalism and fostering the ‘corporatization’ of news. I’m pleased to join IBD because of its prestigious reputation and the fact it has countered the media consolidation trend and is hiring to enhance journalism quality.”
R.C. Harvey, who does the “Rant & Raves” cartoon-news feature at RCHarvey.com, said: “Great news about Ramirez — and a wonderful irony, too, to occupy the initial staff ‘editoon’ job at a business newspaper when other newspapers are cutting staff jobs for the sake of improving the business.” Harvey tipped off E&P to the Ramirez hiring, which was also mentioned Friday on Daryl Cagle’s editorial cartoon blog at Cagle.MSNBC.com.
