The offices of the Corkman newspaper in Mallow, Ireland, has the highest concentrations of the deadly gas radon ever detected in the nation, the Belfast Telegraph reported Thursday.
The Irish Radiological Protection Institute said the concentration of radon found in the paper’s offices was 60 times the acceptable level. The concentration would be the equivalent of receiving 39 chest X-rays every day, the institute said.
Radon is an odorless gas that occurs from the decay of radioactive uranium in rocks and soils, and can cause lung cancer. It is a particular threat in Ireland, according to the institute.
The newspaper has taken steps to eliminate the concentrations of the gas, the institute said.
