Editor Mike Jacobs will become publisher of the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald when Mike Maidenberg retires Dec. 31.
Jacobs, 55, has been editor since 1984, and will now hold the publisher title as well. Jacobs began at the Herald in 1979, and also worked for other papers including The Forum of Fargo, N.D.
The Herald story on the change noted that the editor wasn’t initially interested in the publisher position, but was encouraged by Maidenberg and others. “I look forward to it as a challenge,” Jacobs told his newspaper. “Most of the public probably does not make the distinction between editor and publisher that we in the business do. Still they are different roles. I would like to assure readers that I’ll pay attention to the newsroom, while I assure the corporation that I’ll pay attention to the bottom line.”
The Herald is owned by Knight Ridder, San Jose, Calif.
