James Pimentel, managing editor of The San Francisco Examiner, has been named the newspaper’s executive editor, company officials said.
Pimentel, whose promotion is effective Aug. 1, replaces Malcolm Kirk, who resigned earlier this month to become publisher of The Calgary Herald.
Pimentel began his newspaper career at the Oakland Tribune in 1984. He joined The Examiner in 2001 as sports editor before becoming managing editor in 2003.
During his tenure there, Pimentel has led the paper’s transition to tabloid format and its launch of zoned editions in San Mateo County.
“Jim has been a leader in the successful development and implementation of the Examiner model, and we are fortunate to have his dedication and expertise to head our news operations,” publisher John Wilcox said in a statement.
