Randy Smith, longtime sports editor and columnist of the Journal Inquirer of Manchester, Conn., died Monday. He was 61.
Smith collapsed and died at Manchester Memorial Hospital, the newspaper said.
“Randy was a great writer and a wonderful friend to all of us,” Journal Inquirer publisher Elizabeth Ellis said. “He has been a wonderful contributor to this newspaper.”
Smith’s take on sports ranged from the local to international and everything between. He regularly weighed in on the University of Connecticut sports, horse racing and golf.
“His integrity and fearlessness made him the best at what he did for 30 years,” managing editor Chris Powell said.
Smith waxed reverently about the Masters in a column that ran Monday.
“So while Yankee Stadium is going the way of the Montreal Forum, Shea Stadium, Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium, and other sporting sanctuaries from yesteryear, let’s raise our glasses high and drink a toast to Augusta National Golf Club,” he wrote. “May the Masters play on there forever.”
