Journal Newspapers Inc. of Alexandria, Va., on Wednesday announced it has named James McDonald president and publisher. He assumes the post on Feb. 2.
McDonald, a veteran at developing major-market free dailies, was, until recently, publisher of Philadelphia Metro, the first free major-market daily in the country. He is currently an executive in Metro’s headquarters in New York.
Journal Newspapers said McDonald will team with the company’s owners and a new investment group to form a joint venture aimed at “an aggressive effort” in the Mid-Atlantic.
McDonald also will be president of the Sun Gazette newspapers, a group of free weeklies in Northern Virginia, and of the Central Virginia Gazette and Mechanicsville Local, weekly papers covering suburban Richmond. Additionally, he’ll serve as publisher of Sunday, a free newspaper serving the Washington region, and Middleburg Life, a monthly paper covering Virginia’s Hunt Country.
Journal Newspapers publishes the Northern Virginia Journal, the Montgomery Journal and the Prince George’s Journal. Combined, the three papers have a daily circulation of just over 100,000 and a Sunday circulation of 150,000.
