The Journal Register Co. of Trenton, N.J., on Thursday announced it acquired the assets of O Jornal, a Portuguese-language weekly that covers Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
O Jornal has a circulation of about 14,300 in 30 communities that have an estimated Portuguese population of 370,000, the publishing company said in a statement.
“This acquisition not only expands our reach into the highly desirable and influential Portuguese community, but also offers synergies with our daily newspapers in Central New England,” said Robert Jelenic, the company’s chairman, president and CEO. “It will enable us to provide advertisers with attractive packages in combination with our dailies and certain of our weeklies in the area.”
The Journal Register’s Central New England cluster consists of five daily newspapers with total daily circulation of approximately 70,000 and 25 non-daily publications with total distribution of more than 300,000. Overall, the company owns 23 daily newspapers and 237 non-daily publications.
