A Russian newspaper reporter who was beaten up at the weekend after another journalist was nearly beaten to death staged the event himself to gain notoriety, police said Wednesday.

Moscow police said that the reporter for the local suburban paper Shukowskiye Westi paid a 19-year-old acquaintance 1,000 roubles ($34 USD) to beat him up in order to gain attention in the aftermath of the brutal attack on Kommersant reporter Oleg Kashin.

Police were now considering charges against the journalist, who also heads a local theatre group.

Russian agency reports said the reporter was sticking by his story of being attacked and robbed on Sunday.

Meanwhile Kashin, who was savagely attacked late on the night of Friday, November 5 by two men, remained in an artificially-induced coma in hospital. The attackers crushed his jaw, broke both his legs and left him with internal injuries.
