Judith ?Skippy? Haik, president and publisher of the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, was named Gannett Co. Inc?s Publisher of the Year yesterday.
Haik, who has headed the American since October 2003, navigated the 19,852-circulation daily through its coverage of local devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina.
In accepting the honor, Haik recognized the paper?s entire staff as well as the community members it served during the ?incredibly difficult times.?
Haik also received the President?s Ring, given to the company?s top yearly performers, as did the American?s advertising director, Tracie Fowler. Haik was one of three finalists for Gannett?s Manager of the Year award in January.
