The Daily Journal newspaper of Kankakee has started charging readers to view content online.
Managing Editor Susy Schultz says the north-central Illinois newspaper offers a PDF of each issue online to subscribers. The PDF is available for free to subscribers of the print edition.
The newspaper is trying to emphasize the strength of the Web site by offering blogs and videos online. Schultz said the site will have the first three paragraphs of the top ten news articles, but readers must pay to view the rest.
An annual subscription to the print version of the paper costs $181. An online subscription costs $155 a year.
The Daily Journal has a weekday circulation of about 24,000. Its weekend edition has a circulation of about 30,000.
