‘KANSAS CITY STAR’ RESTRUCTURES STAFF

By: Staff Reports

Editorial Page Editor, General Manager Gone

The Kansas City Star reported Thursday that four top
executives, including Editorial Page Editor Rich Hood and General
Manager Michael Petrak, are leaving. The executives are departing
as part of a downsizing that will result in the loss of 125 full-
time positions at the Knight Ridder paper.

Also departing are Consumer Marketing Director John Maher and
Director of Brand Development Kim Walden.

Star Publisher Arthur S. Brisbane announced that the paper
will no longer have a general manager. The editorial page now
falls under the purview of Star Editor Mark Zieman.

Hood served as editorial page editor since 1993, and was a 29-
year veteran of the Star. Petrak was with the paper since
1994.

The job cuts, which reduce the Star’s staff by 6.7%, were
originally announced about six weeks ago. The paper said
reductions would be completed by July 1.

Brisbane said the four departing executives were offered buyouts.
