?Kentucky Enquirer? App Wins EPpy as Boston.com Moms Disqualifies Itself

By: Mark Fitzgerald

Like a golfer calling a penalty on herself, EPpy Award winner Boston.com Moms has declined the award, saying its parent site was entered by error in a competition category for smaller Websites.

Editor & Publisher announced that the EPpy Award for the Best Community Service Application in a Media-Affiliated Web Site with fewer than 1 million unique monthly visitors will go to  The Kentucky Enquirer’s NKYHelps.org,the runner-up in the category. NKYHelps is a non-profit one-stop site that connects people who want to volunteer their time, money or items to those who need them.

When Teresa Hanafin got the news that her site, Boston.com Moms had won the category, she quickly notified EPpy organizers that the app should not have been considered in the category because Boston.com has far more than 1 million uniques a month. The current monthly traffic, in fact, averages 5.5 million unique visitors. Others at Boston.com misinterpreted the category to mean that if the specific app had fewer than 1 million visitors it would qualify.

Hanafin said she doesn’t expect any plaudits for calling a DQ on Boston.com Moms.

“It’s not a big deal to do the right thing,” she said

EPpy Awards honoring the best of media-affiliated Websites were presented earlier this month at the concluding luncheon of the Interactive Media Conference in Las Vegas. A complete list of winners is here.
