When the community in which you launch a new publication calls your brainchild its Business of the Year, and does so in its first year of operation, you begin to suspect you’ve made a good decision.  Such was the case with the Kitsap Sun’s community newsweekly Shelton LIFE, which was presented this honor at the Shelton-Mason County (WA) Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards dinner, January 20 in Shelton, Washington.  The award was the result of a nomination and voting process by the chamber’s full membership.

Last March, the Kitsap Sun and its Community Publications team launched Shelton LIFE, employing the same publishing model of weekly frequency and direct mail distribution as its three existing community newsweeklies, which include Bainbridge Island, Gig Harbor LIFE and North Mason LIFE.    Similar to its current publications, Shelton LIFE was established to serve a market at the periphery of the Kitsap Sun’s range of commerce and influence and just close enough to make operational sense.   “It has extended our brand,” says publisher Charles Horton, “and enabled new revenue and profit in a market new to us.”

Advance due diligence among business and civic community leaders hinted the Kitsap Sun was a relatively known brand representing an accomplished and forward thinking regional media company.  “Having achieved profitability, the community recognition gives a huge additional boost to our sense of reward,” said Community Publications Director Mike Stevens, who doubles as the Kitsap Sun’s marketing leader.

Chamber Executive Director Heidi McCutcheon was happy to share this message from one of the nomination submissions, “The Shelton LIFE newspaper has been a huge success and has provided a great way to communicate the goings-on in our community.  It’s something that I look forward to receiving in my mailbox each week and feel proud to share with visitors who don’t know much about Shelton. Stephanie Horton (Editor) and Mary Mateo (Account Manager) are always so pleasant to deal with and have such a professional manner that I am happy to share articles and do business with them.”

Shelton Editor Stephanie Horton accepted the award on behalf of the Shelton LIFE team, which includes Community Account Manager Mary Mateo, Senior Advertising Manager Dawn Leibold and Mike Stevens.
