By: E&P Staff

The Ledger in Lakeland, Fla., is purchasing The News Chief in Winter Haven, Fla., from GateHouse Media.

The Ledger reported today the News Chief will continue to operate as a separate daily publication with its own staff. Terms of the deal, which do not include the building or the presses, were not disclosed.

The News Chief will move to the Ledger’s office in Winter Haven. About 24 staffers with the News Chief will be offered jobs in the new location.

“We are deepening our commitment to East Polk,” Jerome Ferson, publisher of the Ledger, told his paper. “The News Chief has a rich history of serving the information needs of the greater Winter Haven community.”

The Ledger will cut its current East Polk section as a result of the purchase.

Nelson Kirkland will become publisher of the News Chief. He is currently advertising director at the Ledger.

This is the second time the News Chief changed hands. Gatehouse bought the paper from Morris Communications in November 2007.
