A judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by a former St. Cloud State University dean against the student newspaper.

Richard D. Lewis had accused the University Chronicle of libel for an article that ran in October 2003. The story quoted a former student who said Lewis was anti-Semitic and used racial slurs.

The Chronicle later published a retraction when it was discovered that the reporter had misunderstood the comments about overhearing the slurs.

Lewis was a history professor and the dean of the College of Social Sciences from 1997 to October 2003. He contended the retraction was inadequate.

But the judge said the Chronicle had no legal duty to refrain from publishing the allegations.
