Wally Lage, President of PAGE Cooperative in King of Prussia, Pa., has announced leadership changes scheduled for the next two years to prepare for the retirement of CEO/founder H. Charles Berky.
The purchasing cooperative’s board of directors approved a transition plan that promotes General Manager John W. Snyder to CEO as of July 1, 2009, after which Berky will stay on in an executive advisory role until his retirement a year later. Assistant General Manager and Technical Director Stephen Schroeder will become General Manager when Snyder becomes CEO.
John Snyder has been with PAGE for 22 of its 24 years, moving up from operations manager to general manager, responsible for the headquarters office. Snyder has been the key contact and negotiator for most of the non-newsprint supplies available to members and has been a senior staff representative on most PAGE committees. He also served as assistant secretary/treasurer, attending all directors’ meetings in a non-voting capacity.
Chuck Berky, along with Pete Eyerly of the Press Enterprise, Bloomsburg, Pa., and Joe Smyth, CEO of Independent Newspapers Inc., Dover, Del., founded the cooperative in 1984 and has been its General Manager or CEO ever since. Berky came from a family-owned newspaper and, after selling his paper to Gannett in 1980, worked with that company for several years.
Member-owned PAGE Cooperative includes 267 newspaper corporations publishing 563 dailies with a combined circulation of almost 12,000,000, and more than 1,000 other nondaily publications.
