Bruce Buchanan has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Harris Enterprises Inc., in Hutchinson, Kan. Buchanan most recently served as the company’s vice president.

The appointment is effective June 3, when Harris’ current president and CEO, John Lee, retires from the newspaper management company after 22 years.

A Kansas native, Buchanan was named editor and publisher of The Olathe (Kan.) Daily News in 1990. When Harris Enterprises contracted to sell the Olathe newspaper in 1995, he joined the Harris headquarters management staff and in 1996 was named editor and publisher of The Hutchinson (Kan.) News.

Lee began as a reporter at The Hutchinson News in November 1972. The following June he was named to the Harris Group’s executive intern program and trained in a variety of newspaper operations at the News, The Salina Journal, and The Hays Daily News.

In early 1976, he was named editor in Hays. He was appointed publisher in August of the same year, and served in that position until he transferred to the company’s headquarters in June 1984.

Lee was named chief executive officer of Harris Enterprises when his predecessor, Lloyd Ballhagen, retired in 1997. Buchanan had assumed his duties as vice president and chief operations officer earlier the same year.

Lee will continue as a senior management adviser until Dec. 31, and will remain as a member of the corporation’s board of directors.
