Judicial Candidate Claims False Statements Made

A former judge and candidate for a county commissioners court in Texas has filed a libel
suit against the publisher of the Fort Bend Star, a weekly newspaper. Gary C. Franks, a
candidate in the Republican primary race, filed the lawsuit against publisher Beverly K.
Carter, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Carter wrote in a recent column that Franks took a one-month vacation at taxpayers’ expense
while serving as a judge in Fort Bend County. Franks says the accusation is not true.

Carter says public records support her allegations. ‘Truth is perfect defense,’ she told
the Chronicle.
