Library Honoring Gus Arriola and Archiving the Late Cartoonist’s Work

By: E&P Staff

The University of California/Berkeley’s Bancroft Library will host a campus event honoring “Gordo” cartoonist Gus Arriola this Thursday — the same day the California legislature is proclaiming “Gus Arriola Day.”

Bancroft is in the process of archiving the work of Arriola, who died last month in California at the age of 90.

The Mexican-American cartoonist, whose pioneering strip ran from 1941 to 1985, was syndicated at a time when virtually all comics were done by white creators. At its peak, “Gordo” appeared in about 270 newspapers.

Bancroft’s Arriola archive includes art, correspondence, personal papers, promotional materials, and more.
