Lifetime Herb Caen Award for Late Cartoonist Phil Frank

Cartoonist Phil Frank was posthumously given the first Herb Caen lifetime achievement award by the San Francisco Bay Area Publicity Club, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

Frank, who died from a brain tumor Sept. 12 at the age of 64, did the “Farley” comic for the Chronicle and also co-created “The Elderberries” strip for Universal Press Syndicate.

Caen (1916-1997) was the renowned Chronicle columnist who won a first lifetime achievement award himself when the National Society of Newspaper Columnists started awarding that honor in 1993.

On Monday, there was a celebration. in Frank’s memory in a San Francisco park.
