Two newspapers that suggested the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann had caused her death have published rare front-page apologies.

Identical headlines on The Daily Express and The Daily Star read “Kate and Gerry McCann: Sorry.” The papers are acknowledging there’s no evidence to support the theory the McCanns were responsible for the little girl’s disappearance and covered it up.

Both papers belong to the Express Group which says it has paid “a very substantial sum” into the Madeleine Fund created by the couple.

The apologies came as Britain’s High Court is due to rule on libel action brought by the McCanns over the newspaper coverage of the search for their daughter.
