The Lewiston Sun Journal has decided not to endorse any of the five candidates for governor in next week’s election.
The newspaper said endorsements must be earned, and it finds none of the candidates inspiring. The Sun Journal indicated that it was prepared to back Republican Chandler Woodcock until News 8/WMTW.com reported last week his personal tax difficulties that led to liens on his property.
The newspaper did come out in support of the proposed Taxpayer Bill of Rights, calling it “an imperfect solution, but a solution, nonetheless.”
The editorial said overburdened Maine taxpayers entrusted the state to provide tax relief after the defeat of the Palesky tax cap two years ago, only to get a measure that fell far short of what’s needed.
