Dairous Stephens of Niagara Falls was sentenced to the maximum 2 to 7 years in prison Friday for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The 20-year-old driver says he was reading a text message just before fatally striking a woman with his car and then fleeing the scene.
The 67-year-old victim, Alice Robinson, was delivering newspapers two days before Christmas when she was struck and left to die.
Stephens said he looked down at an incoming text message just before the accident. His attorney said Stephens panicked because he didn’t have a driver’s license.
State Supreme Court Justice Richard Kloch Sr. told Stephens he wished he could sentence him to more time because of his lack of compassion.
