Maria Carrillo has been appointed managing editor of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. effective Sept. 26. Previously, she was deputy managing editor for enterprise.
Carrillo fills Denis Finley’s position who was recently named editor of the paper.
“I expect Maria to use her skills as an editor and journalist to help us become a great newspaper that is known for its writing, editing, photography, and design,? Finley said in a memo to staff.
Carrillo oversaw of one of the paper’s most successful projects — a 14-part series on yellow fever. Before joining the Pilot, she spent 12 years as an editor and reporter at The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va. Carrillo was a visiting faculty member for the Nieman Foundation for narrative journalist at Harvard University and the Danish Institute for Mid-Career Journalism in Arhus, Denmark.
