The McClatchy Co. Thursday named Mark Owings as president and publisher of The Bellingham (Wash.) Herald,  effective immediately.

The  publisher’s position had been open since August 2009, when the former publisher, Glen Nardi, was named publisher of McClatchy’s Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi,  Miss.

Owings has been with the Herald for 12 years and has been its finance director since 2004.

“We’re delighted to find the next leader of The Bellingham Herald within McClatchy and  within the Herald itself,” McClatchy Chairman and CEO Gary Pruitt said.

Owings, 39, joined The Bellingham Herald in 1998 as a staff accountant. He was named  assistant controller in 1999.

“He played  a key role in restructuring the newspaper’s business operations, including the conversion of  financial systems when McClatchy acquired the paper in 2006, the sale and leaseback of the  newspaper’s downtown building and the outsourcing of printing to the nearby Skagit Publishing,” McClatchy’s announcement said.
